  • Our Brave Boys

Our Brave Boys is Christopher Lee's Radio, Comedy drama series about a high-flying civil servant who is posted to the Ministry of Defence, where she finds herself boss to four military officers. The "boys" are nearing the end of their stint at the Ministry of Defence, and each of them is looking forward to returning to his particular service and, hopefully, to promotion. But with their departure imminent, both they and the redoubtable Zelda discover that their feelings are surprisingly ambivalent.

    Series 1
    01. Nanny Knows Best. MoD workers George and Bill are tired of making government excuses to the armed forces. George and Bill are fed up of making government excuses to the armed forces.
    02. Bangety Bang. Zelda launches an anti-moonlighting campaign.
    03. Ladies Who Lunch. The MOD has to make cuts and the navy, army and air force are all looking vulnerable.
    04. Crabs And Penguins. The Ministry of Defence civil servants must tackle an empty housing crisis.

    Series 2
    01. Thickly Buttered Toast. There is to be a new bank holiday - but can the boys agree which military event it should commemorate?
    02. Lloyd George's Motor Car. Brass nuts and Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy crop up in another tale of the MoD's clerical front line.
    03. Brown Sauce. Someone has to take on the delicate task of supporting the Minister at an arms sales exhibition.
    04. Stiff Limb Syndrome. Problems of recruitment, broken legs and the Queen's tea party dominate life at the clerical end of the MOD.
    05. Honour Your Partners. Bryan's ability to get hold of the right end of a stick is tested to the limit, and a creative suggestion is made as to who should receive the gratitude of the nation.

    Series 3
    01. Flying Tonight. Can it really be true that the MoD is taking UFOs seriously? And is Bryan really the right man to take charge of the secret file?
    02. Tally-ho! For once, Colonel George's fondness for hunting overlaps with the interests of the Ministry of Defence. And for once, Grieves's normal discretion deserts him, leaving Zelda, for once, non-plussed.
    03. Stakeholders. Plans are afoot for Zelda's department to join the move back into the Ministry of Defence main building in the spring, and the new regulations on office flora look like changing everyone's outlook.
    04. Toujours Amis, Sunshine. The imminent arrival on an official visit of the French defence minister poses several tricky diplomatic problems to which entertaining him on board HMS Victory may not be the answer.
    05. England Expects. If no one can say exactly what the Future Rapid Effects System is going to comprise, how can anyone be sure of what it's going to cost? And will there be enough left over for a hair trimmer?
    06. Going, Going, Gong. Zelda has rashly bought the world's smallest radio from Bryan, but is suffering from having to have it surgically removed from her ear, which means that the ear in question is less than ideally sympathetic to Bryan's radical thoughts on improving the MOD's finances.

    Series 4
    01. Tell It Like It Isn't. With the general election in the air, should Zelda and the boys give the same answers to the opposition and the government?
    02. Goodbye Sailor. The Ministry of Defence's office move may be imminent, but that doesn't begin to explain why Zelda, as a high-flying civil servant, should suddenly start using obscure naval terminology, or why Bryan seems to want to become a student.
    03. Stretched Limo. Instead of thinking about how to deal with the announcement of major cuts in all the defence services, Bryan is preoccupied with an idea which will assist Zelda in her wedding plans.
    04. Camping It Up. Normally it shouldn't be too hard to distinguish between guns designed for a new fighter aircraft and bottles of vintage coffee product, but Bryan's logical leaps are sometimes hard to follow, even for his Ministry of Defence colleagues.
    05. Oompahs And Camels. With more defence cuts in the offing, it becomes harder and harder to justify some aspects of military spending such as the Red Arrows, but elaborate plans for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar seem to be off limits.
    06. Hello Sailor. There are some in the Ministry of Defence who feel that the Trafalgar Day 200th anniversary celebration is designed to draw attention away from more important concerns about the future of the military. But the one might provide our brave boys with an opportunity to do something about the other.

    Series 5
    01. The Last New First. The 'boys' are nearing the end of their stint at the Ministry of Defence, and each of them is looking forward to returning to his particular service and, hopefully, to promotion.
    02. Pills For The Boys. Where did the idea of Personnel of Medically Enhanced Capability come from? And could it ever be anything other than science fiction? Is there any connection with the pills which Bryan seems anxious Zelda should take?
    03. The Nuclear Option. With only a few weeks to go in their Ministry of Defence assignments, there is still nevertheless a serious job to be done by Zelda's boys. But Christmas is approaching, and it may once again provide the opportunity to bury some bad news.
    04. Shake, Rattle And Roll. Christmas is rolling inexorably nearer, as is the end of Zelda's Ministry of Defence assignment. But why should Bryan be so keen to have decorations in the office? And could soldiers really be at risk of losing limbs as a result of vibration in tanks? Will the latest Health and Safety Directive answer either of these questions?
    05. The Season Of Giving. End-of-appointment time is looming at the Ministry of Defence, and thoughts of new postings and possible promotions are even crowding out thoughts of Christmas. Could that account for Zelda's change of heart over Bryan's seasonable request?
    06. Pay Day.  The inevitable must be faced at the Ministry of Defence by Zelda's Brave Boys, who are due to return to their respective service careers. They are each hoping for promotion, but will the consequences of Bryan's mistletoe experience have an impact on his chances? Will George get his brigade? Will Bill get his ship? Will Zelda have got what she wanted for Christmas?
